Since its opening in 1979, it has been the showcase for the plastic arts of the coastal culture of the country.

Its new headquarters is located in one of the oldest buildings of Cartagena de Indias located in the Plaza de San Pedro, built in the seventeenth century.

Cartagena de Indias has had few and intermittent art museums, but the Museum of Modern Art of Cartagena is positioned as one of the best museums nationally and internationally.
